Therapeutic Lessons

Therapeutic riding is a form of physical therapy for individuals with a range of physical, emotional, cognitive and social special needs.

It is based on the three-dimensional, rhythmical motion of the horse which stimulates and works the muscles of the rider. The sensory-motor input received by the rider from the horse’s gait is almost identical to the human gait, allowing the gait of the horse to stimulate muscles used for walking, which can result in the rider gaining mobility.

We serve riders with a variety of special needs including ADD/ADHD, arthritis, autism, cerebral palsy, depression, developmental delay, down syndrome, emotional disabilities, hearing/vision impaired, learning/language disabilities, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, paralysis, prader-willi syndrome, rett syndrome, spinal cord injuries, stroke and more.

Benefits of therapeutic riding:

  • Increased range of motion and muscle tone

  • Improved gross and fine motor skills, balance and posture

  • Increased cognitive, speech and language skills

  • Improved concentration

  • Increased independence, confidence and self-esteem

“Wyatt will never be a loud person and riding is helping him develop strong self-esteem along with a voice. We saw progress from the first lesson and he continues to develop every time he has a riding lesson. For example, learning the 'click' for 'let's go' seems so simple, but it took encouragement for him to develop confidence in his voice to do it. There is nothing better for building self-esteem than sitting alone on top of a horse with the confidence to click 'let's go”
